you cannot use another person

You cannot use another person as your
parachute,
hope they break your fall and still remain
whole enough
to get up after you are long gone.

You cannot use another person as your
crutch,
willing them to bear your weight
and hope they walk away
unscathed.

You cannot use another person as your
dumpster,
surround them with your garbage
and hope they dig themselves out
unchanged.

You cannot use another person as your mirror,
and hope their eyes will forget your hard stare,
hope the soft pads of their fingertips forget the feel of yours,
hope they can clean themselves blank after you.

You cannot use another person as your stepping stone
leaving muddy marks on their living room carpet,
and hope they can dust themselves off
scrub clean the dirt you tracked in
on your way through.

You cannot use someone and expect to not leave a mark in their life,
a page turned inwards at the corner,
a chapter hidden or ripped out,
a song always skipped in favour of another.
