hug

Why is it so hard to ask someone
for a hug?

To be enveloped in their arms,
hear their heartbeat,
smell the faint scent of their hair,
for a second knowing that comforting truth
that you're alive.

Your flesh is real and you're held by someone
who cares
about your existence
even in the tiniest of ways.

How can a hug feel like baring your soul,
letting down all your walls at once;
the smallest of flames
facing the wind.

Maybe I'm scared
of understanding how much I need
other people.

Maybe I'm scared.

Why is it so hard to ask someone
for a hug?

Because I won't want to let go.
